WhatsApp automation that stops the moment a customer replies.

WhatsApp automation sends the right message without anyone pressing send: an AI chatbot that answers instantly, a confirmation when someone texts JOIN, and drip campaigns (we call them sequences) that send approved templates over hours or days. All of it runs on the official WhatsApp Business Platform, and the moment a customer replies, the automation steps aside and your team takes over in Slack, Teams or your inbox.

  • Up to 10 messages with waits
  • Stops on any reply or opt-out
  • Sends in each contact’s local hours
  • Never interrupts a live chat

What you can automate on WhatsApp

Six automations that work together on one number, one contact record and one conversation history.

Drip campaigns (sequences)

Up to 10 template messages with waits in between, starting when someone joins. Each person’s series stops as soon as they reply. How it works

AI auto-replies

An AI chatbot (ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini) trained on your content answers WhatsApp messages instantly, day or night, and hands off to a person when needed. WhatsApp chatbot

Keyword opt-ins

When someone texts a keyword like JOIN, they’re opted in, tagged into a list, sent a confirmation and started on your welcome sequence. WhatsApp opt-in

Follow-ups after a chat

When a WhatsApp conversation closes, start a follow-up automatically: a satisfaction check, a quote reminder or a review request.

Scheduled broadcasts

Schedule a one-off campaign up to 90 days ahead. It’s paced automatically and held for each contact’s quiet hours. WhatsApp broadcasts

Opt-outs and consent

STOP replies and Meta’s “Stop promotions” button are recorded automatically, and every automated message checks consent before it sends.

How WhatsApp drip campaigns work

Open Outbound → Campaigns → New campaign → WhatsApp sequence. Build the steps, choose who joins, start it, and watch each step’s results.

  1. 1

    Add your messages

Up to 10 steps, each an approved template personalized with contact fields. Start from the template library and preview every step on a phone.

  2. 2

    Set the waits

Wait minutes, hours or days between messages. Anything that comes due at night waits for your send window, in each contact’s own time zone.

  3. 3

    Choose who joins

Add a list or segment, let people join by texting a keyword like JOIN, or follow up automatically when a WhatsApp chat ends.

  4. 4

    Start and watch

A pre-start checklist confirms your number, templates and plan. Then see sent, read and replied for every step, and where each person is.

A drip that knows when to stop

The fastest way to annoy a customer is to keep sending automated messages after they’ve answered. Social Intents ends each person’s sequence the moment the conversation turns real, and your team or AI chatbot takes it from there.

  • They reply. Any WhatsApp message from the contact stops their sequence and cancels anything not yet sent.
  • An agent messages them. Once your team is talking to the customer, the automation steps aside.
  • They opt out. A STOP reply or Meta’s “Stop promotions” button records the opt-out and ends every sequence.
  • They hit your goal. Add an exit tag such as “customer” and anyone who gets it leaves the sequence.

While a WhatsApp chat with someone is open, their next message waits until the chat ends.

Three ways people join a sequence

Each person joins a sequence once, then moves through the steps on their own schedule.

You add people

Pick a list, a rule-based segment or a smart audience such as “Opted in to WhatsApp marketing”. Before anyone joins you see who will join, who’s already in and who lacks consent.

They text a keyword

Put “Text JOIN to get started” on a flyer, QR code or receipt. The contact is opted in, tagged into a list and starts your welcome series in one step.

A WhatsApp chat ends

Follow up automatically after a conversation closes: a satisfaction check, a quote reminder or next steps. Limit it to one chat widget if you run several.

WhatsApp drip campaign examples

Most sequences are two to four messages. Start with one of these and copy the wording from our free templates.

Welcome series

Right away: welcome and what to expect. Day 2: your most useful tip. Day 7: an offer or a booking link. Welcome message templates

After-chat follow-up

One hour after a chat ends: “Did that solve it?” Three days later: a review request. Feedback request templates

Abandoned cart or quote

A reminder after a few hours, then a last nudge the next day. Anyone who replies goes straight to sales. Abandoned cart templates

Trial onboarding

Day 1 setup, day 3 a key feature, day 10 a check-in before the trial ends. Add the exit tag “customer” so buyers stop getting it. SaaS templates

Appointment prep

Confirmation when they book, what to bring two days before, and directions on the morning of the visit. Appointment reminder templates

Re-engagement

For opted-in customers who went quiet: what’s new, then one offer a week later. Keep it short; replies end it. All 90 templates

Broadcast or sequence?

Both use the same templates, audiences, consent records and reports. Choose by what you’re sending.

Guardrails for automated WhatsApp messages

Automation is only safe if every message is checked. Each step goes through the same checks as a broadcast, right before it sends.

Consent on every step

Opted-in contacts get every step. Contacts who only messaged you get Utility steps, and Marketing steps only if you allow it. Opted-out contacts never get a message.

Local send windows

Pick the hours and, if you like, weekdays only. Each contact’s time zone comes from their phone number, so nobody gets a message at 3 a.m.

Meta limits respected

Sending stays inside your messaging tier with headroom for your team’s replies, and pauses automatically if Meta pauses a template or flags your number.

US numbers handled

Meta doesn’t deliver Marketing templates to US numbers. US contacts skip those steps and still get Utility steps. Read the US guide

Plan limits and review

Every message counts toward your monthly WhatsApp limit, and adding more than 500 people at once on a new account gets a quick one-time review.

Full control

Pause everyone in place, skip a step, stop it for one person, or stop the whole sequence. Edits to a live step apply to messages that haven’t gone out yet.

What WhatsApp automation costs

Sequences are included from the Basic plan ($69/month billed annually) with unlimited agents. Every message counts toward your plan’s monthly WhatsApp message limit: 2,000 on Basic, 10,000 on Pro and 50,000 on Business. Meta charges separately for each delivered template, by category and country, billed to your own WhatsApp Business Account with no markup.

WhatsApp automation FAQs

How WhatsApp automation and sequences work with Social Intents

What is WhatsApp automation?
WhatsApp automation means sending WhatsApp messages without someone pressing send each time: instant AI replies, confirmations when a contact opts in, follow-ups after a chat, and drip campaigns that send a series of approved templates over days. With Social Intents it runs on the official WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API), and automated messages stop as soon as a customer replies so your team can take over.
Can WhatsApp Business send automatic replies?
Yes. The free WhatsApp Business app has basic greeting and away messages. On the WhatsApp Business Platform, Social Intents adds an AI chatbot (ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini) that answers questions from your own content at any hour and hands the conversation to a person when needed.
What is a WhatsApp drip campaign?
A WhatsApp drip campaign sends a planned series of messages to each contact over hours or days, for example a welcome message, a tip two days later and an offer a week later. In Social Intents it's called a sequence. Each message is a Meta-approved template sent through the official WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API), and the series stops for a contact as soon as they reply.
What's the difference between a WhatsApp broadcast and a sequence?
A broadcast sends one message to an audience at one time. A sequence sends several messages to each person on their own schedule, starting when they join, and stops for anyone who replies. Use a broadcast for announcements and a sequence for onboarding, follow-ups and reminders.
What stops a WhatsApp sequence for a contact?
Any WhatsApp message from the contact, a message from an agent or bot in their chat, an opt-out (a STOP reply or Meta's Stop promotions button), or an exit tag you choose, such as customer. While a WhatsApp chat with them is open, their next message waits until the chat ends, so a sequence never interrupts a live conversation.
How do people join a sequence?
Three ways: you add a list, segment or smart audience; a contact texts an opt-in keyword such as JOIN; or a WhatsApp chat ends, so you can follow up after a conversation. Each person joins a sequence once.
Can I send WhatsApp messages without a template in a drip campaign?
No. Messages sent more than 24 hours after a contact's last message must use a template that Meta has approved, so every sequence step is an approved Utility or Marketing template. You can personalize each one with contact fields such as first name and company.
Do WhatsApp sequences reach US phone numbers?
Utility templates do. Since April 1, 2025 Meta has paused delivery of Marketing templates to US (+1) numbers, and the pause was still in effect in November 2026. In a sequence, US contacts skip Marketing steps and still receive Utility steps.
What does a WhatsApp drip campaign cost?
Sequences are included from the Basic plan ($69/month billed annually) with unlimited agents. Every message counts toward your plan's monthly WhatsApp message limit: 2,000 on Basic, 10,000 on Pro and 50,000 on Business. Meta charges separately per delivered template by category and country, billed to your WhatsApp Business Account.
Will a drip campaign get my WhatsApp number restricted?
Not if you message people who opted in and keep messages useful. Social Intents checks consent before every message, honors opt-outs automatically, sends only inside your send window in each contact's local time and stops as soon as someone replies. Meta's quality rating depends on how people react, so fewer, relevant messages work best.
