The three WhatsApp template categories

Meta reviews every template and assigns a category. The category decides the price per delivered message and, for US numbers, whether it is delivered at all. See Meta’s template documentation and pricing.

Marketing

Offers, launches, holiday campaigns, cart reminders, re-engagement and newsletters. The highest per-message price.

Not delivered to US (+1) numbers since April 1, 2025.

Utility

Updates about something the customer already started: orders, bookings, payments, account changes and support requests.

Delivers to US numbers. Keep it free of promotional content.

Autenticación

One-time passcodes for sign-in, sign-up and verification, using Meta’s fixed text with a copy-code button.

Delivers to US numbers.

How to use a WhatsApp template

  1. 1

Pick a template and adapt it

Choose the closest example, rewrite it in your brand’s voice and decide which details become variables.

  2. 2

    Submit it to Meta

In Social Intents, open Outbound → Templates → New template, paste the text, add sample values and submit. Approval is usually quick.

  3. 3

    Choose an opted-in audience

Send only to people who agreed to hear from you on WhatsApp. Social Intents tracks consent per contact and honors STOP replies automatically.

  4. 4

    Broadcast and answer replies

Send now or schedule a WhatsApp broadcast. Replies arrive in Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Chat or the web inbox, where an AI chatbot can answer first.

Sending to US customers?

Meta has paused Marketing template delivery to US (+1) numbers since April 1, 2025. Utility and Authentication templates, replies inside the 24-hour window and conversations started from Click-to-WhatsApp ads (free for up to 7 days in a free entry point window) still work. Social Intents detects US contacts before you send and can fall back to SMS for contacts who opted in to texts. Read the 2026 guide.

Preguntas frecuentes

Template categories, approval, pricing and the US pause, answered.

What is a WhatsApp message template?
A message template is a pre-approved message format that businesses must use to start a WhatsApp conversation, or to message a customer more than 24 hours after their last message. You submit the template to Meta through the WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API), Meta reviews it and assigns a category, and you can then send it with personalized variables such as the customer’s name or order number.
What are the WhatsApp template categories?
There are three: Marketing (promotions, offers, announcements, re-engagement and anything not tied to a specific transaction), Utility (updates about an existing order, booking, account or request, such as shipping notices and payment reminders) and Authentication (one-time passcodes, using Meta’s fixed wording). Meta can reclassify a template if its content does not match the category you chose.
How long does WhatsApp template approval take?
Most templates are reviewed automatically within minutes, though some take up to 24 hours. Rejections usually come from variables at the start or end of the body, too many variables for the amount of text, promotional wording in a Utility template, or content that breaks the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy.
How much does it cost to send a WhatsApp template?
Since July 1, 2025 Meta charges per delivered template message, based on the category and the recipient’s country code. Marketing is the most expensive category; Utility and Authentication cost less. Replies you send inside the 24-hour customer service window are service messages: Meta gives each business phone number 1,000 free service messages per month, then charges a per-country service rate (as of October 2026). Estimate your bill with our WhatsApp API pricing calculator.
Can I send WhatsApp marketing templates to US numbers?
Not currently. Meta paused delivery of Marketing templates to US (+1) phone numbers on April 1, 2025, and the pause was still in effect in October 2026 with no announced end date. Utility, Authentication and free-form replies inside the 24-hour window still deliver. See what still works for US numbers.
Can I edit these templates?
Yes. They are starting points: change the wording, add your brand name and links, and keep the variable numbering in order ({{1}}, {{2}}, and so on). Avoid putting a variable at the very start or end of the body, keep button text to 25 characters, and keep footers to 60 characters.
Is Social Intents an official WhatsApp provider?
Yes. Social Intents is a Meta Tech Provider: you connect your number through Meta’s Embedded Signup, and messages go through the official WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API). Meta bills message fees to your own WhatsApp Business Account.
Do I need the WhatsApp Business API to use templates?
Yes. Templates are a feature of the WhatsApp Business Platform (the Cloud API), not the WhatsApp Business App. Social Intents connects your number to the official Meta Cloud API through Embedded Signup, and with Coexistence you can keep using the WhatsApp Business App on your phone at the same time.
