WhatsApp QR code FAQs

About WhatsApp QR codes

How does a WhatsApp QR code work?
The QR code contains a wa.me link to your number. When a customer scans it with their phone camera, WhatsApp opens a chat with you, optionally with your message already typed, so they only need to tap send.
What is a keyword opt-in QR code?
It is a QR code whose prefilled message is a keyword such as JOIN. When the customer sends it, they are asking to receive WhatsApp updates from you, which is a clear, customer-initiated opt-in. In Social Intents, an opt-in keyword marks the contact as opted in, can add them to a list and can send a confirmation automatically.
Should I download PNG or SVG?
Use SVG for print (flyers, packaging, signs) because it scales to any size without blurring. Use PNG for websites, social posts and documents. Both are generated in your browser.
Do WhatsApp QR codes expire?
No. The code simply contains your wa.me link, so it keeps working as long as the number is on WhatsApp. If you change numbers, generate a new code.
How big should I print the QR code?
At least 2 cm (about 0.8 inches) wide for close-up scanning, and larger for posters viewed from a distance. Keep the white margin around the code and test it with a few phones before printing in bulk.
Is there a limit on the prefilled message?
Longer messages make denser QR codes that are harder to scan. Keep it short, ideally under 100 characters. This tool supports up to 300 characters.
